A Fall PSA from Ginny

When the seasons change and your lips begin to get a little more chapped and tender, think of it as their way of saying, “Hey… we could use a little help here.”
The air gets crisp, heaters start humming, and suddenly that easy summer glow is replaced with something a little more...flaky. Before you wrap up in wool and officially call it pumpkin season, let’s talk about keeping your lips soft from the first leaf drop to the last pumpkin spice latte.
The skin on your lips is a bit high-maintenance... it doesn’t have oil glands! Once moisture slips away, there’s actually no natural way to get it back. With the crisp wind outside and dry heat inside, fall is a dehydration double whammy. Cold, dry air increases transepidermal water loss (TEWL), the rate at which moisture evaporates through the skin. Since lips lack an outer stratum corneum (say that 5 times fast!) as thick as the rest of your face, that water loss happens a lot faster. This is why lips are usually always the first to chap first when temperatures drop!
Here's where lanolin comes in. My personal favorite ingredient (and not just because it comes from my kind!). Lanolin is a natural overachiever because it holds up to 400% of its weight in water and mimics your skin’s own oils. That means it knows exactly what your lips need, when they need it. That’s why The Balm was made to do what most “clean” glosses can’t: actually last. Many clean lip products rely on plant oils alone. While they add shine, they evaporate quickly and lack the semi-occlusive structure lanolin provides, meaning hydration doesn’t stay locked in.
So, what does this mean for your fall routine? Think comfort over gloss. Swap the summer gloss for something a little richer like a lanolin-based balm that keeps hydration where it belongs. Skip the over-exfoliating and instead focus on nourishing. I recommend every night before bed add The Balm into your bedtime routine and lather on a thick layer. It works to lock in hydration while you sleep so your lips will wake up soft, smooth, and ready for your morning coffee. Keep one in your bag, too, for daytime reapplications!
Fall softness doesn’t happen by accident. It happens by habit. The sooner you start, the less likely you’ll find yourself in mid-November wondering where your plump and hydrated lips went.
Stay soft and hydrated,
Ginny 🐑
